Coronavirus: Trudeau, ministers discuss Canada's readiness for possible COVID-19 vaccine | FULL

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday spoke about vaccine distribution and access for Canadians during an address held at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, as Canada continues to see COVID-19 cases surge across the country. During his address, Trudeau discussed the distribution of a possible COVID-19 vaccine, stressing that while other countries do have their own vaccine procedures, they were working with allies and vaccine producers to ensure Canadians do not have to wait a lengthy period before they can access a vaccine once one is approved.Trudeau also said that the government had secured a contract with Eli Lilly for up to 26,000 doses of the company's therapeutic drug, with the option to purchase thousands more down the line.Following Trudeau's address, Public Services and Procurement Minister Anita Anand, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Navdeep Bains, Treasury Board President Jean-Yves Duclos, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo held a separate briefing on procurement and distribution of the vaccine as well as Canada's ongoing battle against the coronavirus.Anand said that Health Canada had begun the regulatory approval process for the Moderna, Pfizer and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine candidates, stressing it would be rigorous to ensure proper safety. She also said they have signed contracts for cold storage of vaccines due to the requirements needed for some vaccines to be kept at cold temperatures, saying it is part of the process to distribute the vaccine effectively across the country.Asked about criticism that rapid tests are not being used in large volume and why things like at home kits approved in the U.K. are not as available in Canada, Tam said the regulator was doing everything they could to make tools available. She said implementation of rapid tests was the responsibility of provinces and territories. For more information: https://globalnews.ca/news/7480077/coronavirus-canada-november-23/Subscribe to Global News Channel HERE: http://bit.ly/20fcXDcLike Global News on Facebook HERE: http://bit.ly/255GMJQFollow Global News on Twitter HERE: http://bit.ly/1Toz8mtFollow Global News on Instagram HERE: https://bit.ly/2QZaZIB#COVID19 #Canada #Coronavirus #Globalnews
